Baseboard Installation

People often ask me when I'm estimating or installing a project, about baseboard installation.  The answer depends on several factors, which I will explain below.

I want to be clear that when considering a new baseboard installation, be sure that new baseboards are replaced AFTER the new HARD SURFACE FLOORING has been installed.  That means Stone, Ceramic, Porcelain, Laminate, and Sheet Vinyl should be installed first.

Baseboard installation in areas to receive Carpet, baseboards should be installed FIRST.  Baseboards installed after installing conventional stretch carpet, make it very difficult to remove the carpet later.  This is because the baseboards are now pushing the carpet down on the tackstrip.  When transitioning between a Carpet and Stone, Ceramic, Laminate area, make sure the height of the baseboard is maintained from the Hard Surface to the Carpet surface.  If you have questions about this explantation, please call me and I will explain in greater detail.

Here are some reasons why you would want to consider baseboard installation:

  • Short Baseboards-In some homes the existing baseboards are only about 2" tall.  These baseboards are generally old and very dated, without much "personality."  If you are remodeling your home, and want to add a custom touch, this is a good time to consider the benefits of replacing them.  Some of your local home improvement centers will have plenty of style and heights to choose from.  Try and pick something that has additional profile grooves, and not a simple smooth bullnose.  It doesn't cost that much more, and the look is worth it.  Also, make sure the baseboards are at least 3" tall.  Why?  Because baseboards can really make the floor installation "sparkle."
  • Painted Baseboards-I'm sure you are all familiar with baseboards that have been painted 3 or more times.  They have carpet fuzz in the paint, along with drips, runs, and other imperfections.  These baseboards are usually old too, and the time it would take to sand them smooth far outways the cost of buying freshly primed and modern looking baseboards, and then painting them with a fresh coat.
  • Stained Baseboards-We often have projects that involve existing stained baseboards.  Since most of the work we do is remodel, these stained baseboards are usually old and marred.  The lacquer covering them is flaking off, and any scratches show badly.  Once again, it is usually quicker and simplier to replace these with new ones.
